How to Use a Polymer Clay Silk Screen – Easy Step-by-Step Guide
Silk screens are a fun and easy way to add detailed, professional-looking designs to your polymer clay creations! Whether you're decorating earrings, pendants, or other clay pieces, silk screens can take your work to the next level.
Here's how to use them:
Condition your clay and roll it out to your desired thickness using a roller or pasta machine. Place the clay on a clean, flat surface.
Position the silk screen shiny side down onto the clay (the shiny side is the back, matte side faces up).
Apply a small amount of acrylic paint to the top edge of the screen.
Use a squeegee or old gift card to gently pull the paint across the screen, applying even pressure to transfer the design.
Carefully lift the screen off the clay while the paint is still wet.
Let the paint dry fully before cutting or baking your clay to avoid smudging.
We recommend using a heavy-bodied acrylic paint for the best results—brands like Liquitex or FolkArt work especially well as they give excellent coverage without bleeding under the screen.
Cleaning your screen:
Immediately rinse your silk screen with cold water and gently rub with your fingers or a soft sponge to remove any leftover paint. Do not scrub or use hot water, as it can damage the mesh.
